The leadership struggle within the Labour Party (LP) has intensified as Julius Abure, the National Chairman, declared that there is no leadership vacuum in the party. This statement comes amid ongoing tensions with the Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee.

Abure, speaking through the LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, emphasized the importance of adhering to the Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025. He urged Abia State Governor Alex Otti and former presidential candidate Peter Obi to respect this ruling.

During a media briefing in Abuja, Abure stated, “The Supreme Court reaffirmed the National Convention of the party held on March 27, 2024,” and reiterated that the internal disputes within political parties are non-justiciable. He reminded party members that their constitutional guidelines are binding and must be respected.

Abure criticized those claiming that their tenure has expired, arguing that they have misinterpreted the Supreme Court’s judgment. He highlighted that political parties must adhere to their internal dispute resolution mechanisms.

The press conference follows a parallel meeting held by supporters of Obi and Otti, who presented a 48-page Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgment, suggesting a different interpretation of the ruling.

When approached for comment, a spokesman for the Usman-led caretaker committee, Tony Akeni, requested more time to respond but was unavailable for further contact.

Abure’s remarks signal a continued commitment to his leadership amid attempts to challenge his authority within the party, as the Labour Party navigates internal divisions and strives for cohesion ahead of future elections.
