Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri is poised to formally join the All Progressives Congress (APC) today, following his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Speaking at the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day at the Ecumenical Centre in Yenagoa, Diri emphasized that his move aims to serve the best interests of the state.

This announcement marks the first time Diri has publicly addressed his resignation from the PDP, effective October 15, 2025. He acknowledged that while some may not immediately understand his decision, he believes that time will clarify its altruistic motives.

Diri expressed gratitude for the gathering of political leaders from various parties at the Thanksgiving service, viewing it as a demonstration of unity and maturity. He highlighted the peace and stability in Bayelsa as reasons for celebration, asserting that politics should foster development rather than division.

“Someone had to take this decision, and I took it on behalf of the state, in the best interest of Bayelsa. Some may not understand now, but in time it will become clear,” he stated.

The governor pointed out his administration’s efforts in completing unfinished projects and initiating new ones, emphasizing that these accomplishments warrant gratitude. He reiterated that the prevailing peace and security in the state are also reasons to be thankful, stressing that politics should focus on development.

Dignitaries in attendance included Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Minister of State for Petroleum Heineken Lokpobiri, both of whom praised Diri’s leadership and viewed his anticipated defection to the APC as timely for the state’s progress.

In a sermon during the event, Bishop Mike Okonkwo of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission underscored the importance of thanksgiving, assuring Bayelsans that as long as they keep faith in God, their victories and blessings are assured.

The event saw participation from numerous notable figures, including lawmakers, traditional rulers, and clergy, all expressing support for Diri’s leadership and urging unity among Bayelsans.
