The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of mirroring the “ruinous game” that led to the downfall of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during its reign. The ADC’s statement comes in response to claims made by APC National Chairman Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda that “key ADC figures” are planning to join the ruling party.
The ADC, through its National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, argues that the APC’s pursuit of members from across the political spectrum reveals its growing awareness of its unpopularity among Nigerians. The party believes that ordinary Nigerians resent the APC due to the hardships it has allegedly inflicted upon them.
Abdullahi stated that the APC will soon realize that true democratic power rests with the people, not with a select few “power merchants.” He suggested that the APC’s desperation to attract ADC members, despite boasting a significant number of governors and senators, indicates a deep-seated understanding that it has become “the most hated party in Nigeria.” The ADC believes that no amount of defections can shield the APC from the public’s discontent.
The ADC views the recent wave of high-profile defections to the APC as a “gang-up against the people” by a ruling elite focused on self-preservation while neglecting the needs of ordinary citizens. The party challenged the APC National Chairman to reveal the names of the “key” ADC members supposedly planning to defect.
Several sources indicate that Nigeria’s political landscape is witnessing a concerning trend of defections from opposition parties to the ruling APC. This has led to concerns about the potential emergence of a one-party state and the weakening of democracy. Some analysts argue that these defections are driven by opportunism and a desire to align with the ruling party for political survival.
