Josephine Anenih, a former minister of women affairs and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has claimed that Atiku Abubakar effectively abandoned the party after his defeat in the 2023 presidential election. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Anenih highlighted Atiku’s inactivity in party affairs and his failure to attend meetings since the election.
Her remarks come in the wake of Atiku’s formal resignation from the PDP, stated in a letter dated July 14, 2025, where he cited “irreconcilable differences” and disappointment over the party’s current direction.
Anenih noted, “If you ask me, I would say he didn’t exit yesterday; he had exited after the last election.” She mentioned that the party had reached out to Atiku for leadership guidance, emphasizing that the PDP needed his direction during a time of drifting leadership.
Despite Atiku’s exit, Anenih expressed confidence in the PDP’s resilience, asserting that its strength lies in its grassroots structure. She stated that the party would continue to thrive, regardless of individual departures, echoing sentiments from Chief Bode George about the party’s enduring legacy.
Anenih concluded by affirming the commitment of loyal PDP members to ensure the party’s survival and growth, regardless of leadership changes
