The University of Port Harcourt chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has declared an indefinite strike over the alleged failure to implement the Federal Government-ASUU agreement signed in December 2025.

The branch chairman, Professor Omeh Obasi Ngwoke, said the action was also triggered by alleged irregularities within the university.

Ngwoke said the union had held several meetings with the university management and remained patient while awaiting the payment of outstanding salaries in line with directives from the Federal Government.

He, however, said the continued non-payment of salaries had left the union with no option but to commence the industrial action.

The ASUU chairman lamented that members were struggling financially, alleging that some lecturers had died amid the prolonged salary crisis.

The union said the strike would continue until the university management addressed its demands and complied with relevant Federal Government orders and directives.

ASUU urged the university to resolve the outstanding issues to pave the way for the suspension of the industrial action.
